- List all the packing materials and accessories you may need to store your items. Items to consider are tape, bubble-pack, drop cloths, plastic sheets, furniture and mattress covers, boxes and clothing boxes are a few commonly used items for storage.
- Shelving can help keep your storage unit organized and items accessible.
- Place frequently needed items and/or files near the door or at the front of your unit.
- Label your cartons and keep a list of the labeled cartons for easy reference.
- Try to create a walkway to the rear of the unit for better accessibility.
- Fragile items such as dishes and glassware should be cushioned with packing and placed on the top of stacked containers in the unit.
- Take full advantage of your unit's space use the full height if possible.
- Disassemble items such as bed frames to maximize the space in your unit.
- When storing appliances, be sure they are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Keep freezer and refrigerator doors slightly ajar.
- To preserve metal and stop rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of oil.
- Containers and boxes should be filled to capacity; partially full boxes may collapse or tip over in the storage unit.
- Pack heavy items such as books or tools in small boxes to avoid bottoms from bursting open.
- Line the bottom of your unit with a drop cloth for added protection.
- Use mothballs as added protection for your stored clothing and other belongings.
- Do not place boxes directly on the floor - use pallets or skids.
- To help save space, beds and tables should be disassembled. Wrap legs for protection.
- Cover wood and upholstered furniture to protect from damage.
- Wrap lamp bases with padding. Wrap and place shades in separate containers.
- Mirrors should be stored on edge, not flat to prevent warping.
- Long handled tools such as shovels, racks, brooms, hoes etc., can be tied in bundles.
- Store mattresses and box springs on long edges for firmer support. Keep elevated from floor and covered for protection.
